Credible Messenger Program

Friends Of Long Creek has partnered with the Maine Department of Corrections and the Credible Messengers, a unique mentoring program involving former inmates who are able to coach incarcerated and justice -involved youth on re-entry and engaging with community as well as accessing available resources. 

The messengers have similar backgrounds to those involved in the criminal justice system and are uniquely positioned to credibly relate to program participants. The messengers meet with young residents in Long Creek and maintain connections after the youth are discharged or released on probation back to their communities. The Credible Messenger program is based on the core belief that communities have the transformative resources available to uplift, stabilize, and re-engage returning citizens. 

The program’s holistic and restorative approach bridges the gaps between individuals and support systems available, leading to more effective life planning and a reduction in re-offending behaviors.
